Wassergeist Lives Up To Expectations

Thursday, 7th September 2017

Exceptionally well-bred 3YO colt Wassergeist (Fastnet Rock-Te Akau Rose, by Thorn Park) lived up to the expectations surrounding him yesterday at Sandown Park when scoring a soft win over 1400m under hands and heels riding from Craig Williams in the Chandler Macleod Maiden Plate. Sent off $2.40 favourite following a runner-up finish at Sandown in his most recent start the $240,000 NZB National Yearling Sales series graduate was allowed to dictate the pace up front and was cuddled to the line to win unextended. The Gr1 Caulfield Guineas appears a logical target for connections that include Coolmore Stud, Newgate Farm and leading Singapore trainer Shane Baertschiger. His dam Te Akau Rose, who hails from a strongly performed New Zealand damline, won the Gr2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes and was multiple stakes-placed. Bred by SF Bloodstock, Wattergeist is named after a water sprite. He is prepared by expat kiwi training partners Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young.
