Thursday Odd Spot - Cotehele Is In The House
It may appear simply a sedate Thursday meeting at Gosford today, but dig a little deeper and Races 4 and 5 hold some gold. Two expensive yearlings are on show, one making her debut and the other having his second outing, with each having famous broodmare Cotehele House as their fourth dam. It's old news but, to the uninitiated, Cotehele House is a daughter of the incomparable Eight Carat, and a central member of a family so drenched in Group race performance that one doesn't know where to look. So to the runners at Gosford … Race 4 sees 4YO mare Flying Rose make her long awaited debut. She's from Melbourne Rose, a Zabeel sister to Listed St Leger winner Berlioz. Third dam Abbaye produced New Zealand Gr2 winner Taimana and stakes placed Onlyarose. She was a $140,000 Magic Million National Yearling Sale pin-hook for Paul Willetts Bloodstock before selling to Paul Perry Racing for $340,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She's had three impressive trials and will be piloted by Paul King who rode a double earlier this week. Race 5 sees the second Cotehele House-line runner resume following an inauspicious debut at Hawkesbury. His name is Underground and he's out of NZ mare Starmon. The 3YO colt was a $320,000 purchase by Jadeskye / Gerald Ryan from the draft of Mill Park Stud at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. For the record, Cotehele House is a medieval Tudor home overlooking the river Tamar on a high Cornish bluff, with a heritage just as illustrious as its thoroughbred namesake.
