Superb Build Up To Gr1 Golden Rose Continues
To paraphrase Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, it's a case of curiouser and curiouser as we build towards the Gr1 Golden Rose at Rosehill Gardens on September 23. Last weekend's racing has only added to the allure of what promises to be one of the most exciting renewals of the major Sydney Spring feature. Merchant Navy's H.D.F. McNeil Stakes win at Caulfield confirmed that the undefeated son of Fastnet Rock is up to the task of tackling Sydney's gun crop of 3YOs, headed by Menari, Pariah, Addictive Nature, Chauffeur, Kementari and Invader. While Pariah, Menari and Kementari are seen as the probable benchmark runners ahead of the Gr1 Golden Rose, there are plenty of possible smokies that could upset the proverbial applecart. The additional 200m of the Golden Rose suggests that Not A Single Doubt's daughter Champagne Cuddles will be even better than when missing by a lip to Formality in the Gr2 Furious Stakes (1200m). She's currently at $15. At $26 Dracary's, Jorda, Siege Of Quebec, Gold Standard and Jukebox all have understandable pre-post admirers. The picture is likely to become a little clearer on Saturday when the Gr2 Run To The Rose (1200m) is held at Rosehill. Last year's Golden Rose was captured by Godolphin's superb 3YO Astern, now at Darley's Kelvinside property where he is making his stud debut.
