Newitt Heading Home

Friday, 1st September 2017

Craig Newitt is heading back to his home state of Tasmania to continue his riding career, reports racenet. Newitt, a former Tasmanian champion apprentice, arrived in Melbourne in 2002 to ride for the powerful Lee Freedman stable and since then has established himself as one of Victoria's premier jockey riding 35 Gr1 winners. Newitt said family was the main reason behind the decision. "We've been thinking about it for a while, we've got four kids now, it's a lifestyle choice," Newitt said. "It's only a 40-minute flight, so if I need to I can still fly back to Melbourne to ride mid-week or Saturday." He added: "I've had a good run, been really fortunate." The jockey affectionately known as "froggy" nominated Gr1 Australian Cup & Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Pompeii Ruler as the best horse he ever had the good fortune to sit on. "Pompeii Ruler was probably the best horse I have ridden," he said. "But there were some great sprinters like Miss Andretti, Lankan Rupee, Samaready and Extreme Choice who could have been the best but he was retired at three."
