Champion US Mare Songbird Retired Ahead Of Sale

Friday, 1st September 2017

In significant global news, Champion 4YO mare Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro-Ivanavinalot, by West Acre) has been retired, reports thoroughbreddailynews.com. The daughter of Darley’s star sire Medaglia d”Oro claimed her ninth top-flight victory in July’s Gr1 Delaware Handicap before going down by a neck in last weekend’s Gr1 Personal Ensign Stakes. Subsequent veterinary examinations which revealed injury to her hind legs convinced connections to call time on her career, and Songbird will be offered for sale at Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale. With her only prior defeat being to Beholder in the Breeders' Cup Distaff last November, Songbird retires with 13 wins (including the Gr1 Ogden Phipps Stakes, Gr1 Cotillion Stakes, Gr1 Alabama Stakes, Gr1 Coaching Club American Oaks, Gr1 Santa Anita Oaks, Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Gr1 Chandelier Stakes, and Gr1 Debutante Stakes) and 2 runners-up (the Gr1 Personal Ensign Stakes & Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff) from 15 starts for US$4,692,000 in earnings. She was both Champion 2YO Filly & Champion 3YO Filly.
