Cup Winner Pleases in Return

Monday, 28th August 2017

Reigning Melbourne Cup winner Almandin (Monsun-Anatola, by Tiger Hill) looks set for another prosperous spring campaign after his encouraging first-up performance at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Having his first run since winning Australia's most famous race in November, the German-bred stayer showed his class under top weight of 61kg to finish 0.75 length second to the Darren Weir-trained Pacodali in the MSC Signs Handicap over 2040 metres. Co-owner Nick Williams said Almandin's effort showed he was on track to defend his title at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November. "He had 61kg but he was thrown into the race due to the weight scale being a quality handicap so you'd like to see him run well. He finished off quite well, I couldn't be happier with him," Williams told racing.com. The $6 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) will be run at Flemington on Tuesday, 7 November.
