Royal Request Wins Darwin Cup

Tuesday, 8th August 2017

It proved to be a case of fourth time lucky for Royal Request (Bel Esprit-Nassidarra, by Nassipour) who finally claimed an elusive win in the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2000m) at Fannie Bay racecourse in Darwin yesterday. The Neil Dyer-trained galloper had lined up in Darwin’s biggest race every year for the last four years, with his best performance being a second placing behind Lightinthenite in 2015. However, there was no denying the 7YOs moment in the sun yesterday thanks to a canny ride by Jarrod Todd that saw the 51-start veteran angle into open space at the top of the straight and bound clear to score by three lengths over Saturday Sorcerer & Lieder. The popular local victory saw Royal Request improve his record to 12 wins from 51 starts for $552,944 in earnings. “It’s fantastic,” said winning trainer Neil Dyer, who was celebrating his third Darwin Cup triumph. “I thought he was the best horse in the race. I was worried when he received a penalty [for his previous win in the Metric Mile] but he’s big and strong. He lived up to what we thought he was capable of doing.”
