At Sandown in Melbourne, Chatswood Stud's Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes winning stallion Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel-Miss Prospect, by Rory's Jester) added a Group success when 5YO bay gelding Ability (Reward For Effort-Paeroa, by Dubai Destination) relished the heavy conditions to score an explosive last-to-first win in the $150,000 Gr3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, defeating Lankan Rupee & Duke Of Brunswick. Raced by the estate of the late Phil Sly, Ability, who was a $150,000 purchase by Matchem Racing at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Yallambee Stud, improved his record to 7 wins (including the Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final) and 4 placings from 16 starts for $369,000 in earnings. "We've always had a big opinion of this horse and the gelding operation unfortunately had to be done but it's turned him into a racehorse instead of a horse that wasn't going to live up his potential," jockey Dwayne Dunn told racing.com. "He's the new kid on the block. Maybe if Lankan Rupee had one more run under his belt he might have given us a little bit more of a challenge, but this horse ticked a lot of boxes today." Ability is a direct descendant of champion mare Glorious Song, dam of multiple Gr1-winning champion racehorse and sire Singspiel, and top sire Rahy. This is also the family of dual Gr1 winner Devil's Bag, Gr1 winner Campanologist, and Saint Ballado.
