Winter Wins Gr1 Irish 1,000 Guineas

Monday, 29th May 2017

At The Curragh in Ireland, former Coolmore shuttler and triple Gr1-winning champion European sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) celebrated an elite race success when 3YO filly Winter (Galileo-Laddies Poker Two, by Choisir) proved a class above her rivals when scoring by 4.75 lengths in the Gr1 Irish 1,000 Guineas (8 furlongs), defeating Roly Poly & Hydrangea. Owned by Coolmore’s Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier, Winter improved her record to 3 wins (including the Gr1 English 1,000 Guineas) and 3 placings from 6 starts for £453,150 earnings. Winter joined star fillies Attraction and Finsceal Beo as only the third filly to claim the English & Irish 1,000 Guineas double. "She's maturing all the time and is a really strong traveller. When Ryan let her down today she went into overdrive. She'll probably get further than a mile but the Coronation Stakes will be next, once her owners agree,” trainer Aidan O’Brien told Racing Post. Jockey Ryan Moore said: "It was very easy and she gave me a lovely ride. I couldn't have been more impressed with her – she was relentless and it rode like a piece of work for her. She's a very good filly.”
