Australia & New Zealand Weekend Stakes Schedule
This weekend the racing spotlight will shift to Adelaide for the running of the Gr1 Australasian Oaks and the Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville. The Australasian Oaks, first run in 1982 when won by Rose of Kingston, is for 3YO fillies and is run under set weights conditions. Fighting out favouritism for the fillies’ classic is the Darren Weir-trained Kenedna ($2.90) and the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart. Kenedna, a last-start impressive winner of the Gr3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) in Adelaide, will start from barrier three, while the peculiarly named Egg Tart, who has looked very smart winning 4 of her 6 starts, will jump from barrier five. Meanwhile, the $1 million Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes, which was run for the first time in 1983 as the Gr3 Swettenham Stud Stakes, has grown in status in recent times with winners including champion fillies Alinghi (2005) and Black Caviar (2012). This year, the race favourite is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained English ($4.60 Tab fixed odds), the highest rated horse in the field, ahead of Gr1 winner Sheidel ($5), Super Cash ($7) and brilliant filly I Am A Star ($8.50). All told, there are 18 stakes races across Australia and New Zealand this weekend.
