Time Runs Out For Volpe Veloce Classic Bid
Unbeaten Kiwi filly Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge-Bardego, by Barathea) will finally launch her spring campaign this Saturday in the Mills Reef Winery and Restaurant 3YO at Tauranga after a frustration preparation, reports theinformant.co.nz. By Newgate Farm's Gr1-winning shuttle stallion Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock), the aptly named Volpe Veloce, whose name in Italian translates to "fast fox", has won her only two starts to date, including the Listed Castletown Stakes (1200m) at Wanganui in June. But nothing has gone right for the talented 3YO this prep. She was a late scratching before the Gr3 Gold Trail Stakes after lashing out in the gates, then missed a race at Te Rapa with an elevated temperature. Her belated return also means she will miss her primary spring target - the Gr1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Riccarton on 12 November. "I'm hoping she'll finally get her spring underway this weekend, it's about time," trainer Graham Richardson said. "But I've been very happy with her in the last couple of weeks. Her work's been great and hopefully she'll go a good race first-up." He added: "Unfortunately I've had to withdraw her from the 1000 Guineas today [Wednesday]. We just ran out of time to get her down there. We'll just play it by ear with her from here. There are plenty of nice fillies' races up here in the next few months that will suit her."
