Archives Wins Listed Hampden Stakes
At Doomben racecourse in Brisbane, Darley's three-time Gr1-winning shuttler Helmet (Exceed and Excel-Accessories, by Singspiel) sired his first stakes winner when 2YO colt Archives (Helmet-Preserve, by Canny Lad) scored by 0.2-length for trainer John O'Shea in the $100,000 Listed Hampden Stakes (1200m) for 2YOs, over fellow 2YO colts Jericho (Smart Missile-Advance to Go, by Red Ransom) & Redouble (Redoute's Choice-Special Mission, by Towkay). This was the first stakes victory for the Godolphin-owned and bred Archives who took his record to 1 win and 1 placing from 2 starts for $72,350 earnings. From the Gr1-winning mare Preserve (Canny Lad), Archives is a three-quarter brother to dual Gr3 winner Safeguard and hails from the family of Gr1 Golden Rose winner and sire Denman. Godolphin's Australian manager Henry Plumptre was understandably delighted with Archive's win. "It's important as it's the first stakes win for the sire," said Plumptre, adding that the best of Archives would not be seen until the spring. "I think you will see a very good horse in the spring," he said. "His sister (Safeguard) got to 1400 metres, but that was as far as she wanted, but this fellow is by Helmet, who won a Caulfield, so he might get a mile."
