2016 Racing Aust Hall Of Fame Inductees Announced

The 2016 inductees into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame were revealed yesterday at Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide. Former champion jockey and successful trainer Pat Hyland was one of 10 new names that will be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame at a ceremony to be held this Friday, 20 May, at the Adelaide Convention Centre. In a distinguished riding career that spanned three decades, Hyland rode more than 2,300 winners including the grand slam of Australian racing -  the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper. Hyland joins an esteemed list of inductees across the categories of Jockey, Horse, Trainer and Associate. In the Jockey category, the late Noel McGrowdie will be inducted in recognition of his numerous feature victories, including in the 1957 Melbourne Cup where he partnered with Straight Draw. In the Trainer category Neville Begg, a leading trainer in Sydney in the late 1960s and 70s who trained 39 Gr1 winners, will be inducted, alongside fellow horseman Cecil Godby, who will be inducted in recognition of his achievements with Heroic and other thoroughbreds in feature races in the 1920s. Outstanding journalist and historian Les Carlyon and esteemed race broadcaster Joe Brown are the 2016 inductees in the Associate category. This year four Horses are being inducted: the versatile Sydeston; arguably the most successful Australian horse to compete abroad, Merman; Triple Crown winning juvenile and Golden Slipper winner Luskin Star; and champion racemare Leilani. For the first time this year, all Australian Racing Hall of Fame members will be celebrated at all feature race meetings Australia-wide on Saturday, including Flemington (VIC), Rosehill (NSW), Doomben (QLD), Belmont Park (WA) and Morphettville (SA).

The induction ceremony will be broadcast on Sky Thoroughbred Central (Channel 528 on Foxtel) from 8.30pm.
