Cool Chap Wins Listed VRC St Leger
At Flemington in Melbourne, Coolmore's deceased dual Derby-winning shuttler & 6-time Gr1 victor High Chaparral (Sadler's Wells-Kasora, by Dashaan) added a black-type success when 3YO gelding Cool Chap (High Chaparral (IRE) 1999 out of Cherishing (USA) 2008, by Johannesburg) scored by 2.25-lengths for trainers Lee & Anthony Freedman in the $200,000 Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) for 3YOs, over 3YO colt Etymology (New Approach-Weaver of Words, by Danehill) & fellow 3YO gelding Bullish Stock (Tavistock-The Lady, by Stravinsky). This was a strong staying performance by Cool Chap who advanced his record to 3 wins and 3 placings (including the Listed VRC Galilee Series Final Handicap) from 7 starts for $214,450 earnings. Cool Chap was purchased by Rob Slade for $150,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud. "We only got him recently off Peter Moody," co-trainer Lee Freedman told Racing.com. "He's thrived in the stable - I said to Rob [Slade], he's worked as good as any horse I've got ready for a staying race." Freedman said Cool Chap could possibly head towards the Brisbane or South Australian Derby's, but co-owner Rob Slade was leaning towards sending the gelding for a spell. "It's always hard to gauge [the form], but it's good to see the horse get out to this trip and win so easily," Freedman said.
