Tattersalls Gold Cup First-Up For Gatsby
Dual Gr1 winner The Grey Gatsby is likely to make his seasonal reappearance in the Gr1 Tattersalls Gold Cup (2100m) at the Curragh on 22 May, reports At the Races. Despite racing consistently at the top level last season, the 5YO failed to reach the lofty heights of 2014 when he won the Gr1 French Derby and Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes. However, he did run some brave races in defeat, including a short head second to Free Eagle in the Gr1 Prince of Wales's Stakes, and creditable placings behind Arc winner Golden Horn in the Gr1 Juddmonte International and Gr1 Eclipse Stakes. "He is in good form and we are looking to start him in Ireland," said trainer Kevin Ryan. "I would love to take him to the Breeders' Cup at the end of the year, all being well. He can't be as unlucky as last year as it seemed everywhere we went had soft ground." He added: "He will have two options at Ascot, the Hardwicke and the mile and quarter race (Prince of Wales's). We will make our minds up after Ireland, but if we don't go there we will keep options open." Ryan confirmed that the son of Mastercraftsman would be retired at the end of the year. "He has not lost his speed but we would like to step him up at some stage. This will be his last year," he said.
