Nyquist Wins Gr1 Florida Derby

Monday, 4th April 2016

At Gulfstream Park in the US, former Champion US 2YO & Coolmore shuttler Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie-Playa Maya) celebrated an elite success when 3YO colt Nyquist (Uncle Mo-Seeking Gabrielle, by Forestry) scored a dominant 3.25-length win for trainer Doug O'Neill in the US$1 million Gr1 Florida Derby (9 furlongs) fro 3YOs, over fellow colts Majesto (Tiznow-Unacloud, by Unaccounted For) & Fellowship (Awesome of Course-Go Girlfriend Go, by Demidoff). Nyquist showed why he is the horse to beat in next months Kentucky Derby when extending his unbeaten record to 7 wins (including the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Gr1 Frontrunner Stakes & Gr1 Del Mar Futurity Stakes) from 7 starts for US$3,333,600 earnings. Nyquist's overall earnings received a significant boost due to the $1 million bonus offered to any graduate of the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale to win the Florida Derby. "He's got the mindset of a champion," O'Neill told Blood Horse. "Now, it's up to the whole crew and the racing gods to keep him injury free." One would think Nyquist would simply have to remain in one piece to be the horse to beat in the 142nd renewal of the Run for the Roses. However, he must overcome a recent history that is against champion juveniles. Street Sense, the 2007 Kentucky Derby winner, is the only juvenile champion to win the opening leg of the Triple Crown.
