Volpe Veloce Impressive Winner For Foxwedge
Newgate Farm's exciting young sire Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) produced yet another winner yesterday when the Graham Richardson-trained filly Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge - Bardego, by Barathea) saluted in a 2YO maiden over 1200 metres at Matamata in New Zealand. Foxwedge now has 5 individual winners from his first crop. The aptly named Volpe Veloce, whose name in Italian translates to "fast fox", showed that a bright future awaits when she cruised to an easy 2.3-length win over fellow fillies Family Secret and Eleonora. Volpe Veloce had indicated a bold debut performance was on the cards when she finished a close-up second to stakes winning and Gr2-placed filly Sassy 'N' Smart in a 1000m trial on 9 February. "She's all class," Richardson said post-race. "When she trialled it gave us a good line with Sassy 'N' Smart winning because we were right behind her and she's won a stakes race...so we were pretty confident." He added: "The main target for her will be the South Island circuit, the same as Strada Cavallo [dual Gr1-placed stable-mate] last year. She will take that same path towards the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series. If she can win some black-type she will be a valuable filly." Purchased for NZ$240,000 by Richardson Racing at the 2015 NZB Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Lyndhurst Farm, Volpe Veloce is a half-sister to Listed Black Opal Stakes winner Delago Bolt from the Gr3 Blue Diamond Preview winning filly Bardego.
