Waller Provides Update On Winx & Kermadec
Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller has provided an update on his two stable stars Winx and Kermadec ahead of their clash in Saturday's Gr1 Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick. The stable-mates are the only horses under double figure odds for the $3 million mile feature, with Winx currently at $1.85 and Kermadec at $7. "She's going very well," Waller told Racing.com yesterday. "Hugh Bowman rode her this morning and was very happy with her work so everything is on track for Saturday. Hopefully the rest of the week will be plain sailing...she may have a quiet gallop on Thursday just to keep her ticking over, but she's great." Waller added: "It will be tough for her to win with that big weight [56.5kg] but the timing of the race is perfect. We could have missed this race for the Queen Elizabeth, but what if something happens in between? They can get sore feet, they can have all sorts of issues. The ownership group is happy for her to run and therefore she runs." Meanwhile, defending Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec will carry equal top weight of 57kg and meets Winx on 1.5kg better terms following his 1.5-length defeat by the star mare in the Gr1 George Ryder Stakes last start. "His work has been very good; of a typically high standard for him," Waller said. "His fitness levels have steadily improved. First-up in the Canterbury Sakes he had a good blow, and even in the George Ryder running second to Winx he was pretty heavy in his wind after the race...so he will be fitter on Saturday. Obviously he has a gap to bridge [with Winx] but he does get a small turnaround in the weights."
