Doncaster Option For Le Romain

Tuesday, 8th March 2016

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees has nominated the Gr1 Doncaster Mile as a possible target for Le Romain (Hard Spun-Mignard, by Strategic) following his surprise win in last Saturday's Gr1 Randwick Guineas (1600m). Sent out at the lucrative odds of $21, Le Romain proved too strong for star colt Press Statement holding off the $1.30 favourite in the run to the line to score a narrow but decisive 0.2-length win in the $1 million 3YO feature. "I wasn't sure that we could beat the favourite by any means, but I was very pleased with how my horse had prepared for the race," Lees told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "He's one of these horses who just continues to improve." He added: "He was holding him [Press Statement] and even through the line he was still ahead of him. He ran the mile out strongly which is very encouraging...we now have to consider our options which way to go with him." Lees said the Gr1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick on the opening day of The Championships (2 April) was a potential target for the progressive 3YO. "We have a few options. We could go to the Doncaster which is very attractive with only 49 kilograms on his back; whether he is seasoned enough to take on those older horses is the question," Lees said. "The fact that he was strong at the end of the mile means we could also consider the Rosehill Guineas [Gr1, 2000m]....and the other alternative is to freshen him up and drop him back to a race like the Arrowfield three-year-old sprint which is on the final day of The Championships." Le Romain - whose record reads 3 wins and 4 placings (including the Gr2 ATC Hobartville Stakes) from 7 starts for $788,025 earnings - is the 47th stakes-winner and the ninth individual Gr1 winner for his Kentucky Derby winning sire Hard Spun.
