Sentimental Payne Runner Nearly Upsets $1.50 Favourite
At yesterday's Wyong race meeting, a sentimentally named David Payne-trained runner almost upset $1.50 favourite Reinforced (Snitzel-Shower of Steel, by Comet Shine) in the opening event. Second elect in the small field of 5 runners, Chimboraa went with a heartbeat of defeating the favourite in the first leg of one of the smallest early quadrella dividends ever seen in NSW ($9.70). While Payne is acknowledged as the trainer of 100 Gr1 winners in his native South Africa before making Australia home many years ago, he is little known for his exploits in the saddle. In 1968 Payne rode 5YO Chimboraa to win the Durban July Handicap, South Africa's greatest race.
