Winx Wins Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes

Monday, 14th September 2015

At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, Darley's deceased shuttler & Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) added a Group success when richly talented 4YO mare Winx (Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl, by Al Akbar) unleashed an explosive turn of foot from back in the field to score by 0.2-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $200,000 Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Sons Of John (Oratorio-Mountain Echo, by Scenic) & 6YO gelding Ninth Legion (Fastnet Rock-Xaar's Jewel, by Xaar). This was an outstanding first-up victory by Winx who took her record to 7 wins (including the Gr1 Queensland Oaks, Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes & Gr2 Furious Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 Australian Oaks & Gr1 Flight Stakes) from 13 starts for $1,172,925 earnings. Winx, from the dual stakes-winning New Zealand mare Vegas Showgirl, was a $230,000 purchase by Magic Bloodstock at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud. Trainer Chris Waller confirmed that Winx's primary spring target is the Gr1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on 3 October. "Only good horses can do that, she is very special and I think she is in for a big year," Waller told Sky Racing. "She will press on to the Epsom now and that looks like a nice race for her."
