Najoom Gets Green Light For Stradbroke Bid
Exciting Sydney filly Najoom (Encosta de Lago-Explosive, by Fappiano) has been installed as favourite for the $2 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) on Saturday week after connections paid the late entry fee yesterday, reports horseracing.com.au. The Emirates Park-owned filly is assured of a start in Queensland's premier race after her brilliant victory in the Gr3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben last weekend. Najoom has been handicapped with 50.5kg and Trevor Lobb from Emirates Park said that he checked with the filly's regular rider Tommy Berry first to see if he could make the light weight. "She is bouncy and happy and we decided to have a shot at the Stradbroke after we talked with Tommy to make sure he could make the weight," Lobb said. The Gai Waterhouse-trained Najoom, who boasts an impressive strike rate with 5 wins from 7 starts, gave trainer the Waterhouse stable a scare on Sunday morning when cutting her foreleg at the beach but Lobb said that it would not hinder her Stradbroke bid. "It was just a little nick while she was playing around. It's no problem at all,'' Lobb said. Najoom, who was purchased by Emirates Park for $225,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Willow Park Stud, is out of a three-quarter sister to stakes winners Bhutane Dane and Upon This Rock and hails from the family of multiple Gr1 winner Criterion.
