Lucky Breeders Cheered Al Kazeem Home
In an unusual twist for a lucky group of breeders, they had more of a vested interest than most when Dubawi's 7YO son Al Kazeem added to his Gr1 tally last weekend in the Gr1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. While not uncommon in the greyhound industry where leading performers sometimes start serving select breeding stock during their race careers to potentially prove themselves at stud earlier, thoroughbreds only ever start serving at stud once retired from racing. According to bloodstock.racingpost.com, in the case of Al Kazeem, who now also boasts Gr1 victories in the Gr1 Prince of Wales's Stakes, Tattersalls Gold Cup & Gr1 Eclipse Stakes, sub-par fertility in his debut season led to around just 25 mares getting in-foal. Al Kazeem subsequently returned to racing in the colours of his owner-breeder John Deer, whose Oakgrove Stud at Chepstow is home to a rare Al Kazeem filly, acquired by Deer when purchasing her in-foal dam for 85,000 guineas at Tattersalls in 2014.
