Our Boy Malachi Spelled

Tuesday, 26th May 2015

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes has provided an update on North Queensland sprinter Our Boy Malachi who was found to have bled after finishing a distant last in the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane on Saturday. Under the Australian Rules of Racing Our Boy Malachi has been sent for a mandatory three-month spell with Hawkes saying the 6YO could bypass the spring to be saved for an autumn campaign. "He's going to stay in Queensland and have a good, fat spell," Hawkes told RSNs Shane Anderson yesterday. "We may give him one run down here (Melbourne) in the spring, but there's no rush. The owners said 'if you want to give him six months in the paddock and just get him ready for the autumn, we don't care', so we'll just let the horse tell us." He added: "He's never bled before, the previous trainer said he's never done it either. The worse part is that Tommy Berry [jockey] said he was just going to win and win by panels, but that's the way it is...it's a great leveller this business. We've just got to give him a good spell and look after him. We'll give him however long it takes." Our Boy Malachi, otherwise known as the 'Rockhampton Rocket', has won 17 of his 21 starts highlighted by stakes victories in the Gr3 Hall Mark Stakes, Listed Razor Sharp Handicap & Listed Starlight Stakes.
