Moore To Ride Shamal Wind

Tuesday, 26th May 2015

Trainer Robert Smerdon has revealed that champion English jockey Ryan Moore has committed to riding Shamal Wind (Dubawi-Firemaid, by Machiavellian) in the Gr1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot provided Coolmore do not require his services, reports racing.com. "Ryan Moore is the jockey of choice and he has said if he's not required by Coolmore, then he'll ride her," Smerdon said. "It was too far out for him to know whether Coolmore require him or not." He added: "Damien [Oliver] is going to be at Ascot to ride Wandjina, so he put his hand up and said if Ryan's not available he'll do the job." Shamal Wind rounded out her domestic Royal Ascot preparations with a barrier trial at Cranbourne yesterday, where she closed off strongly for second behind the Lee and Anthony Freedman's Cruden Bay. "We were happy with it," Smerdon said of the trial effort. "We were looking to give her a solid hit-out in the straight but she got held up behind horses, but he kept her going through the line to make sure she had the gallop she needed." He added: "Going by what we know of her history and her body weight, I think she's at a good place for departure next week." Shamal Wind departs for England with Brazen Beau on Wednesday 3 June.
