Blinkers For Jewel In Oaks

Tuesday, 26th May 2015

Sue Walsh will apply blinkers to talented Kiwi filly Exquisite Jewel (Lucky Unicorn-Game Duchess, by Montjeu) in Saturday's Gr1 Queensland Oaks, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Foxton trainer will add the headgear to sharpen the filly up following her strong finishing fifth in last Saturday's Gr2 The Roses. "Jim Byrne came in and said there was no way he was getting off her for the Oaks," Walsh said. "I warned him that she would go to sleep mid-race and that she'd need a good dig up to get going and he said that was exactly what happened. The blinkers might help her to get going more quickly." A Gr1 classic victory would make Exquisite Jewel a very valuable filly indeed as she is a direct descendant of legendary broodmare Eight Carat, dam of champion galloper Octagonal, his freakishly talented brother Mouawad, and fellow Gr1 winners Kaapstad, Diamond Lover and Marquise. In fact, Marquise, winner of the Gr1 Captain Cook Stakes and mother of Gr1 winner Shower Of Roses, is Exquisite Jewel's third dam.
