Najoom Wins Gr3 Fred Best Classic

Monday, 25th May 2015

At Doomben in Brisbane, ill-fated Widden Stud sire Northern Meteor (Encosta de Lago-Explosive, by Fappiano) added a Group success when exciting 3YO filly Najoom (Northern Meteor-Charlety Star, by Arena) scored by 3.3-lengths, despite being caught wide throughout, for trainer Gai Waterhouse in the $125,000 Gr3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO fillie Miss Cover Girl (Monashee Mountain-Tolart, by Show a Heart) & 3YO colt Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock-Awesome Planet, by Giant's Causeway). Najoom took her record to 5 wins (including the Gr3 Hawkesbury Guineas) and 2 placings from 7 starts for $253,050 earnings. Najoom's owners Emirates Park will now consider paying the late entry fee for the $2 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) on 6 June. "His Excellency will enjoy the moment and then we'll let the dust settle before we decide if she runs in the Stradbroke," Waterhouse said. "She's the most improved filly I've got in training and today she just zoomed didn't she?" Najoom, who hails from the family of multiple Gr1 winner Criterion, was purchased by Emirates Park for $225,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Willow Park Stud.
