Knee Injury Forces Hucklebuck Spell
Gr1 winner Hucklebuck (Elvstroem-Kondari, by O'Reilly) will be spelled after he was found to be suffering from sore knees, reports racing.com. The injury may explain Hucklebuck's disappointing performance in last weekend's Gr1 Goodwood in Adelaide in which the 4YO finished 12th. "You don't actually see it unless you watched the stewards' film but down the back straight he was sort of turned sideways and it knocked the wind out of him," trainer Phillip Stokes said. "He also lost a shoe and when that all happened I think he must have twisted his leg because he pulled up sore. He's got a bit of wear and tear and a bit of cartilage damage so he just needs a bit of time out." He added, "He'll go out for eight, maybe 10 weeks and then we'll just see how he is after that." Stokes said the injury was likely to mean that Hucklebuck would not defend his Gr1 Emirates Stakes title in the spring. "We'll pick out the right races for him later in the Spring but he probably won't be ready in time for a race like the Emirates, he might be aimed at something a bit shorter," he said. "There's plenty of options including the Railway Stakes (1600m) in Perth or even the autumn next year. He's only lightly-raced so we're not in any rush."
