Srikandi To Bounce Back

Thursday, 21st May 2015

Trainer Ciaron Maher is confident that classy sprinting mare Srikandi (Dubawi-Raining, by Hurricane Sky) can bounce back from her disappointing last-start performance in the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane on Saturday. In the BTC Cup two weeks ago, Srikandi threw away any chance of victory when leaping in the air when the gates opened resulting in an eighth place finish (beaten 7-lengths) behind surprise winner Hot Snitzel. Speaking on RSN radio yesterday morning, Maher said Srikandi had done nothing but please the stable since and was ready to show her best on Saturday. "She's had an easy week. She had a strong gallop yesterday [Tuesday] morning and has come through that well and looks nice and bright today," he said. "I've always aimed to have her at her peak for the Stradbroke but her fitness should be pretty good for Saturday." He added, "I'm very happy with her. She's done well up here. Hopefully she can get away cleanly and bounce back to her best form. She should be right in it." Maher confirmed that Srikandi's primary winter target is the $2 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) on 6 June, but refused to rule out a start in the Gr1 Tattersall's Tiara. "She might do both. We'll just see. The plan was always to go to the Stradbroke but we may go the Tiara as well," he said. Maher got his wish for a good barrier with Srikandi to jump from barrier 5 on the weekend.
