Our Boy Malachi Spot On: Hawkes

Thursday, 21st May 2015

Trainer Wayne Hawkes has provided an update on the progress of top sprinter Our Boy Malachi (Top Echelon-Rusticate, by Rustic Amber) who will attempt to claim his maiden Gr1 victory in Saturday's Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane. The 'Rockhampton Rocket' started a clear favourite in the Gr1 BTC Cup (1200m) at his most recent outing but tired in the concluding stages to finish a close third behind Hot Snitzel. Hawkes rejected the theory posited by some racing experts that Our Boy Malachi failed to handle the Doomben track, saying the horse would have won had he been drawn more favourably. "He's really good. He didn't have the best of luck for the first 400 metres in the race the other day. I'm sure if you swap his barrier and the winner's barrier, we'd be winning..," he told RSN radio yesterday. "If he draws barrier one he wins, as simple as that. He drew out and Tommy had to work to get across...he ran out of his skin." He added, "He's great. He's really, really well, and it would be nice to cap the season off with another Group One." Our Boy Malchi will be ridden by Tommy Berry and will jump from barrier 12 in the $750,000 feature.
