Cold Rules Free Eagle Out Of Gr1
Prodigiously talented Irish colt Free Eagle, favourite for the Gr1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on Sunday, will miss the feature due to a head cold, reports Racing Post. Speaking on Wednesday morning, trainer Dermot Weld said of the High Chaparral 4YO: "Free Eagle has picked up a head cold and we've decided to be cautious." He added: " The weather has been very changeable and apart from the head cold he is fine. But he won't be running on Sunday and we will train him for Royal Ascot where he will have a choice of engagements." Free Eagle is entered for the Prince of Wales's Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot next month. Weld has always had a huge opinion of Free Eagle, who announced himself as a rising star when he resumed from more than a year on the sidelines in early September to thrash his rivals by 7-lengths in a Gr3 at Leopardstown. The 4YO then defied his inexperience to finish a close third behind Noble Mission in the Gr1 Champion Stakes at just his fourth start.
