Tahlio: A Pedigree To Watch

Wednesday, 20th May 2015

Her racing career may not have got off to a winning start, but juvenile filly Tahlio could be a horse to watch if her pedigree is any guide. The Luke Oliver-trained 2YO made her debut yesterday in a fillies maiden on the Geelong synthetic track but found the 1100m far too short finishing sixth, some 7.5 lengths astern of the winner Alucinari. However, Tahlio is not bred for speed and she can be expected to come into her own once she steps out to a mile, and considerably longer. By Vinery stallion More Than Ready, she is the first foal of the well-performed The Miniver Rose who was prepared in the UK by leading trainer Richard Hannon. The Irish-bred mare won 2 of her 9 starts with her biggest win coming in the Gr2 Park Hill Stakes over 14.5 furlongs at Doncaster. She was also twice tested at Gr1 level, finishing unplaced in both the 2009 English Oaks behind outstanding filly Sariska and the Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp behind Ask. The daughter of High Chaparral was clearly highly regarded by her esteemed trainer, with Hannon describing her as "quirky but very talented" after her Gr2 Park Hill Stakes victory. The Miniver Rose was purchased by Gary Mudgway on behalf of Peter Carrick's Victoria-based Lakeview Resources for 340,000 guineas at the 2009 Tattersalls December Breeding Sale with Tahlio selling to trainer Luke Oliver for $65,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale from the draft of Vinery Stud. Hailing from the English family of 1991 Victoria Derby winner Star Of The Realm and 1987 Champion US mare Carotene, Tahlio is sure to appreciate a test of stamina in the future.
