Gleneagles Heads Irish Guineas Contenders
Brilliant English 2,000 Guineas winner Gleneagles (watch his victory below) heads the list of 16 possibles for Saturday's Gr1 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh, reports Sky Sports. His trainer Aidan O'Brien has also left in Fastnet Rock colts Cape Clear Island and Smuggler's Cove, as well as Highland Reel, Sir Isaac Newton, The Warrior and War Envoy. Meanwhile, Roger Varian is hoping for some softening in the ground to allow Belardo to show his true colours. The Lope De Vega colt looked a genuine Classic contender after being crowned Champion European 2YO last season and landing the Gr1 Dewhurst Stakes, but the Godolphin colt was disappointing on his 3YO debut, finishing down the field in last month's Greenham Stakes at Newbury. Varian insists Belardo has lost none of his ability judged on his homework and he expects a bold show on Saturday, as long as underfoot conditions are suitable. "He doesn't want it too quick. I think good ground and anything easier than good is favourable," the trainer told At The Races. "He did some very nice work on Sunday morning, the plan is to run him on Saturday and we just hope it doesn't dry out too much." He added: "You have to keep faith in these horses and you can't write them off after one run, especially as the ground was very quick at Newbury and he just never let himself down. We'd be very confident that, provided the ground isn't too quick, we've a very good horse on our hands still."
