Waterhouse Confirms Pornichet Spring Plans

Wednesday, 13th May 2015

Gai Waterhouse has confirmed that she will nominate Pornichet (Vespone-Porza, by Septieme Ciel) for the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the spring following the French-bred import's brilliant victory in the Gr1 Doomben Cup last Saturday. "I can tell you all right now that the former Frenchman will be nominated for the Cox Plate, and he also will be nominated for the Melbourne Cup," Waterhouse wrote on her blog. "It takes a very special horse to gap a Group One field as Pornichet did on Saturday." Waterhouse admitted that Pornichet is yet to reach the level of her 2013 Melbourne Cup hero Fiorente, but she is adamant that the best is yet to come. "He is not Fiorente just yet, but he is certainly doing everything right as we speak. This was a fantastic win from a brilliant racehorse; a horse that I have only scratched the surface of at this stage," she said. As for Australia's weight-for-age championship, the Cox Plate, a race that Waterhouse is yet to win, she added: "Doomben to Moonee Valley is a quantum leap, but Pornichet is up for it."
