Mount Athos Retired

Wednesday, 13th May 2015

Globetrotting UK stayer Mount Athos (Montjeu-Ionian Sea, by Slip Anchor), who finished fifth and third in the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Melbourne Cup, has been retired, reports Racing Post. The 8YO son of Montjeu, who was last seen winning the Listed Aston Park Stakes at Newbury in May last year, was scheduled to make his seasonal reappearance at the end of this month but a training setback convinced connections to call time on his career. The Dr Marwan Koukash-owned gelding, named after a Greek mountain, raced in six countries and will now be retrained as a riding horse after a break. Trainer Marco Botti said: "Mount Athos is a favourite with all the staff. He will be missed and we wish him well in his retirement." Mount Athos won 9 of his 31 starts, highlighted by the Gr3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes & Gr3 Ormonde Stakes, for over $1 million prize money. He will be best remembered in Australia for his two tilts at the Melbourne Cup, in which he placed fifth behind Green Moon in 2012 and third behind Fiorente and Red Cadeaux in 2013.
