Baffert Pleased With Pharoah & Dortmund
Trainer Bob Baffert expressed his satisfaction with American Pharoah and Dortmund after watching the stable-mates work at Churchill Downs yesterday as they prepare for the second leg of the US Triple Crown in Saturday's Gr1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse, reports bloodhorse.com. The Hall of Fame trainer was at the Twin Spires track to check up on American Pharoah and Dortmund, who finished first and third respectively in the Kentucky Derby on May 2. Both colts galloped over 12 furlongs. "I was happy with both of them," Baffert said. "It looks like they have kept the same energy level (as before the Kentucky Derby). American Pharoah floated over the ground and picked up his gallop the last half-mile. He wanted to do more. Dortmund got aggressive with (exercise rider) Dana (Barnes) and galloped well." Baffert has traditionally kept his Preakness starters at Churchill Downs until the middle of Preakness week. The horses are scheduled to travel to Pimlico on Wednesday. "Coming out of a big race like the Derby, you don't have to do too much. It is just a matter of keeping them at the same level," Baffert said. "The good horses are easier to train. These two are used to running a lot and coming back in two weeks is not a big concern with them."
