Pornichet Wins Gr1 Doomben Cup

Monday, 11th May 2015

At Doomben in Brisbane, 4YO French-bred entire Pornichet (Vespone-Porza, by Septieme Ciel) landed the biggest prize of his career when scoring by 2.3-lengths for trainer Gai Waterhouse in the $650,000 Gr1 Doomben Cup (2000m) for 3YO+, over 5YO French-bred gelding Weary (Astronomer Royal-America Nova, by Verglas) & 9YO UK-bred gelding I'm Imposing (Danehill Dancer-On Fair Stage, by Sadler's Wells). This was Pornichet's third stakes victory since arriving in Australia and took his record to 7 wins (including the Gr3 Neville Sellwood Stakes & Gr3 Sandown Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains) from 16 starts for $924,748 earnings. Pornichet, who is raced by a syndicate that includes Mt Hallowell Stud and Segenhoe Thoroughbreds, will now be aimed at two of the most prestigious events on the Australian racing calendar - the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the spring. "He will be nominated for two races. Don't worry about that," Waterhouse said in reference to the Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate, reports the Courier Mail. "Like he did at Toowoomba, he had it won at the top of the straight," Waterhouse said in reference to the former European galloper's dominant last-start Toowoomba Cup victory. "He's shown he's well and truly worthy of being set for a race like the Cox Plate." Winning jockey Blake Shinn echoed Waterhouse's sentiments. "He has a great turn of foot and will make his presence felt in some of those top races for sure," he said. "You have to remember, he's only a four-year-old and the best is yet to come."
