Tall Ship Wins Listed Warrnambool Cup
Beautifully bred import Tall Ship (Sea the Stars-Magical Romance, by Barathea) earned himself a shot at some of the feature staying events in the spring with a brilliant victory in the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) at Warrnambool in Victoria yesterday. The 4YO Irish-bred son of six-time Gr1 winning European champion Sea The Stars showed all the signs of a top-class stayer in the making when scoring an easy 3.75-length win over 7YO US-bred gelding Arch Fire (Arch-Quickfire, by Dubai Millennium) & 6YO Irish-bred mare Lucciola (Verglas-Serres, by Daylami). In winning his fourth race in succession, Tall Ship took his record to 6 wins and 1 placing from 12 starts for $247,648 earnings. Trainer Darren Weir said the OTI Racing-owned galloper would now be sent to the spelling paddock to prepare for the Melbourne spring racing carnival. "He's had a great campaign, there's been no pressure from the owners, they've just said place him in the races you think best suit and try and bring him on," Weir said. "He had good form when he was bought, so he came to us a horse with good potential and while he ran well at Sandown at his first start (in Australia) he took a massive step at home from that first to second start he won at Geelong." He added, "He's just taken little steps since then and he's taken another good one today I think." Weir said it was his preference to send Tall Ship for a break with the gelding having achieved all he can for now, and would likely come back for the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Tall Ship is out of Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Magical Romance (Barathea) who was sold as a broodmare for a world record £4.6 million in 2006. Magical Romance is a three-quarter sister to English and Irish Oaks winner Alexandrova, the 2006 Champion 3YO filly of Great Britain, Ireland and Europe.
