NZ National Breeding Stock Sale Starts Monday
On Monday, the annual NZB Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Sale gets underway at Karaka, south of Auckland. Held over three days, the sale features 340 weanlings, 182 broodmares, 25 yearlings, eight 2YOs, six unraced horses and three stallion shares. The weanling section will be held first. The sale has an impressive history as a source of profitable pinhooks for buyers and as a source of quality future racehorses. A textbook example of both pinhooking and racetrack success is the winner of this year's $1m Karaka Million, New Zealand's richest race, Hardline (NZ) (Showcasing). Purchased from Haunui Farm's draft at the 2013 National Weanling Sale for $43,000 by Hallmark Stud, he was offered again at the 2014 Karaka Select Sale where Liam Birchley Racing secured him for $130,000. Other recent examples include pinhooks by perennial leading weanling vendor Curraghmore. A weanling sold by them in 2014 for $20,000 subsequently sold for $95,000 this year at Karaka as a yearling, while a 2013 weanling sold by them for $55,000 subsequently sold for $170,000 at the 2014 National Yearling Sale.
