Cox Plate Target For Volkstok'n'barrell
New Zealand trainer Donna Logan has provided an update on the progress of star 3YO Volkstok'n'barrell (Tavistock-Volkster, by Volksraad) who will be targeted at the Cox Plate in the spring. Speaking on Sky's Racing HQ, Logan said the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas winner was enjoying his time in the paddock and that she was confident his best racing days were ahead of him. "He's thriving. He looks a million dollars," Logan said. "Not quite a month he's been in the paddock now. He'll have another week or so then he'll come back into work." Logan nominated the Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on the 29 August as the likely starting point for the gelding's spring campaign, with his program to be aimed towards the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in October. "Just looking forward I think it is fairly obvious where we would head. Probably the Memsie is probably where we would kick off in Melbourne. Then we would probably be looking at the Underwood, then you'd either go the Caulfield Stakes, which is two weeks before the Cox Plate, or you've got the Turnbull, which is three weeks before the Cox Plate. We'd just wait and see how he was going before making a decision." She added, "He's got a great turn of foot and you need that in a Cox Plate. I think he would be really well suited. I don't think anyone has seen the best of him yet. I just think he is really going to excel this time in work. I think the improvement will be immense."
