McDonald Leads World's Best Jockey Rankings
However, it isn't all bad news for James McDonald who is currently on top in the world's best jockey standings, reports NZ Racing Desk. With the race for the Longines World's Best Jockey Award just passing the halfway stage, McDonald enjoys a significant lead over Hong Kong-based Brazilian superstar Joao Moreira, widely regarded as the best in the world, with last weekend's Kentucky Derby-winning rider Victor Espinoza, Frenchman Maxime Guyon, last year's winner Ryan Moore and Australia's Damien Oliver and Craig Williams next in order. Scoring is from points accumulated in races identified as the world's top 100, with 12 points for a win, six points for second and four points for third. The award year is the 12 months from December 1 to November 30. McDonald has amassed 66 points through five wins and a second to be 22 points clear of Moreira, on 44, with Espinoza two points back on 42. His wins have come in the Chipping Norton on Contributer, the Canterbury Stakes on Cosmic Endeavour, the Ranvet Stakes on Contributer, the George Ryder Stakes on Real Impact and The BMW with Hartnell. While the majority of the scoring races over the next five months are run in Europe, McDonald intends riding at major meetings in England during the northern hemisphere summer through his link with global powerhouse Godolphin, for whom he is a retained rider. "How long it lasts, I don't know. There's a lot of racing to come and the busiest time of the year in Europe really only starts now, but it's pretty cool to be on top," McDonald said.
