Pornichet To Back Up In Doomben Cup

Tuesday, 5th May 2015

Meanwhile, Gai Waterhouse is likely to back up Pornichet (Vespone-Porza, by Septieme Ciel) in Saturday's Gr1 Doomben Cup after his Toowoomba Cup victory on the weekend. Racing's First Lady was forced to run the French import at Toowoomba after he missed out on a start in the Gr2 Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast the previous week, and says she sees no reason why he won't handle the seven-day turnaround. "Not at all, and I love to back-up horses," Waterhouse told the Gold Coast Bulletin. "He did it so easily (win the Toowoomba Cup) that I can't see any problem with him backing up." Pornichet has proven himself to be more than competitive at Gr1 level. He finished third to Karakontie in the French 2,000 Guineas at Longchamp as a 3YO, and then two starts ago he closed strongly from the rear of the field to finish fifth behind Kermadec in the Doncaster Mile.
