Our Boy Malachi Chasing Gr1 Glory On Home Soil

Tuesday, 5th May 2015

Our Boy Malachi (Top Echelon-Rusticate, by Rustic Amber) has returned to his native Queensland to run in the $500,000 Gr1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday, reports horseracing.com.au. Known as the 'Rockhampton Rocket', the brilliant sprinter boosted his remarkable record to 17 wins from 19 starts when saluting in the Gr3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick two weeks ago and will now embark on an ambitious winter campaign aimed at the Gr1 BTC Cup, Gr1 Doomben 10,000 and Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m). Co-trainer Michael Hawkes labelled Our Boy Malachi a "serious galloper" after his Hall Mark Stakes win and can't see why the 6YO won't continue his tremendous winning streak. "Why can't he keep winning?" Hawkes told the Gold Coast Bulletin. "He has done everything right and the biggest thing is the horse is a winner." he added, "It's been a phenomenal story and if we could win a Group 1 with him that would be the icing on the cake." Jockey Tommy Berry, who was aboard Our Boy Malachi in his most recent outing, believes the striking chestnut has what it takes to be competitive at the elite level. "I am looking forward to seeing what he has got to offer in Queensland," Berry said. "He can't do anymore then what he has done thus far and he is quite exciting."
