Gleneagles Wins Gr1 English 2,000 Guineas
At Newmarket in the UK, former Coolmore shuttler and triple Gr1-winning champion European sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) celebrated a Gr1 success when 3YO colt Gleneagles (Galileo-You'resothrilling, by Storm Cat) scored by 2.25-lengths for trainer Aidan O'Brien in the Gr1 English 2,000 Guineas (8 furlongs) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Territories (Invincible Spirit-Taranto, by Machiavellian) & Ivawood (Zebedee-Keenes Royale, by Red Ransom). Gleneagles, who gave trainer Aidan O'Brien his seventh win in the Classic, took his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 National Stakes) from 7 starts for £543,612 earnings. "He's a great traveller and has a lot of speed," O'Brien told Racing Post. "He was always very good and quickens very well. Ryan said they couldn't lead him and he ended up getting there early. The big thing about him is pace - he's always shown it." The beautifully bred Gleaneagles (who is out of a sister to Giant's Causeway) is now as short as even money for next month's Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and as short as 1-2 for the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
