Dortmund Wins Gr1 Santa Anita Derby
At Santa Anita Park in the US, Vinery Stud's Kentucky Derby & Preakness Stakes-winning stallion Big Brown (Boundary-Mien, by Danzig) celebrated a Gr1 success when 3YO colt Dortmund (Big Brown-Our Josephina, by Tale of the Cat) extended his unbeaten record to six when scoring by 4.25-lengths for trainer Bob Baffert in the US$1 million Gr1 Santa Anita Derby (9 furlongs) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts One Lucky Dane (Lookin At Lucky) & Bolo (Temple City). This was the second Gr1 victory for Dortmund who took his record to 6 wins (including the Gr1 Los Alamitos Futurity) from 6 starts for US$1,289,400 earnings. The 100 points Dortmund acquired with the Santa Anita Derby win puts him in second place in the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" standings. The last undefeated colt to win the Kentucky Derby was Dortmund's sire, Big Brown. "It's good to see this horse just really developing the way he has from his first start," trainer Bob Baffert told Bloodhorse.com. "I just love the way he ran today… We bought him, he looked like a really good horse, but he was just a big horse and sometimes they don't turn out."
