At Ascot in Western Australia, Darley's deceased Gr1 Golden Slipper winning stallion Canny Lad (Bletchingly-Jesmond Lass, by Lunchtime) celebrated a Gr1 success when 6YO mare Elite Belle (Canny Lad-Mississippi Belle, by Marooned) scored by 0.75-length for trainer Grant Williams in the $1 million Gr1 Railway Stakes (1600m) for 3YO+, over 4YO mare Balmont Girl (Balmont-Pocket Aces, by Brief Truce) & 7YO Irish-bred gelding Moriarty (Clodovil-Justice System, by Criminal Type). A homebred for prominent WA owner and breeder Bob Peters, Elite Belle took her record to 9 wins (including the Gr3 WATC Prince of Wales Stakes, Gr3 WATC Hyperion Stakes, Gr3 Belmont Sprint, Listed Carbine Club of WA Stakes & Listed La Trice Classic) and 8 placings (including the Gr3 Roma Cup, Gr3 RJ Peters Stakes, Gr3 Western Australian Oaks & Ascot 1,000 Guineas) from 23 starts for $1,212,300 earnings.
