Binary Impresses On Debut

Thursday, 20th November 2014

Owner Alan Bell's familiar grey and red diagonal striped silks have figured prominently in the news recently thanks to the deeds of boom sprinter Deep Field, and yesterday his colours were again to the fore when 3YO gelding Binary  made an impressive debut for Team Hawkes at Canterbury. Binary, who is by Starcraft out of Gr1-winning New Zealand mare Calveen (Canny Lad), was well backed at his first start and he didn't disappoint, letting down with a sharp turn of foot to win by 2-lengths over Crimson God and Shadow Lord in the TAB Rewards Plate over 1250m. "He's a really nice horse going forward," co-trainer Michael Hawkes told TVN. "It was a nice starting point today. I think the last 100 metres was his best once he actually concentrated he really hit the line strong." Hawkes said he was unsure whether Binary would have another run this preparation or be spelled for the autumn. "We'll see how he pulls up. He's still a bit soft, but he's going to be a very nice horse in the future." Binary was a NZ$310,000 purchase at the 2013 NZB Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Haunui Farm.
