Araldo Put Down After Cup

Wednesday, 5th November 2014

In an unrelated incident following the running of yesterday's Melbourne Cup, the Michael Moroney-trained Araldo was humanely euthanised by veterinarians after fracturing a pastern in a freak accident, reports theage.com.au The seventh place-getter is believed to have been "spooked" by a spectator waving a flag when heading back to his stable after the race. A disconsolate Moroney said, "They've run 150 Melbourne Cups and nothing like that has happened before. It's shattering for my owners, my staff and myself. We have just lost a great young stayer who was lightly raced and had just run seventh in the Cup. My staff are shattered. Everyone here is sticking together. We don't blame anyone."
