Sonntag Wins Listed Sale Cup

Monday, 27th October 2014

At Sale in Victoria, unbeaten European Champion juvenile & dual Gr1-winning Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo-Speirbhean, by Danehill) added a black-type success when 4YO gelding Sonntag (Teofilo-Parfaits, by Strategic) scored by 0.4-length for trainer Henry Dwyer in the $150,000 Listed Sale Cup (1600m) for 3YO+, over 7YO gelding Lightenuff (Lago Delight-Hotnuff, by Spartacus) & 5YO gelding Red Inca (Stratum-Beautiful Victory, by Victory Prince). This was an impressive return to racing from this year's Queensland Derby winner who took his record to 4 wins (including the Gr1 Queensland Derby) and 2 placings from 9 starts for $481,495 earnings.  Sonntag was purchased by Dwyer and Sky Racing's Shane Anderson for $58,000 at the 2013 Inglis August Thoroughbred Sale from the draft of Darley. "That's a great return from the horse today. Obviously the expectation is there when you've won a Gr1..there's probably more pressure leading up to this because you know you've got a good horse and you want to come back well and he's done that," winning trainer Henry Dwyer told TVN. "Right the way through he's been both physically and mentally immature," Dwyer added. "He's still learning how to be a racehorse but he's got such good endeavour. That's his greatest attribute. There's nothing of him but he's clean-winded, tries hard and it takes him a long way." Dwyer confirmed that Sonntag would have just one more start this preparation before being spelled to get ready for the Gr1 Sydney Cup in the autumn.
