Nozomi Wins Listed Geelong Classic
At Geelong in Victoria, Darley's deceased Gr1 Dubai World Cup-winning shuttler Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) added a black-type success when 3YO Godolphin colt Nozomi (Street Cry-Rose of Danehill, by Danehill) scored by a nose for trainer Anthony Freedman in the $120,000 Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colt Preferment (Zabeel-Better Alternative, by Flying Spur) & 3YO gelding Miracle The Second (Stratum-Princess Ruhie, by Fusaichi Pegasus). This was the first stakes victory for Nozomi who took his record to 2 wins and 1 placing from 7 starts for $88,170 earnings. Nozomi is a half-brother to Gr2 Mooney Valley Classic winner Kazanluk (Red Ransom) from Danehill's multiple Gr2-winning daughter Rose Of Danehill. The beautifully bred colt will now head to the Victoria Derby (2500m) on Saturday week (1 November). Jockey Dwayne Dunn said he was confident Nozomi would stay and believes he has the ability to win a good race. "He's always shown the talent, he's just taking a little while to put everything together," Dunn said. "He fought off the third horse really good and the second horse came really late." That second horse was Zabeel colt Preferment, who charged home to claim second after looking no chance at the 200m mark. Being by Zabeel, Preferment is likely to improve significantly with the addition of blinkers should trainer Chris Waller decide the gear change is in order for next week's Derby.
